541 of Lesotho’s 2,600 Inmates Are HIV+

22 May 2025 by Pascalinah Kabi

The Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS) has reported that there are just over 2,600 inmates across its facilities nationwide. Of these, 541 inmates are HIV positive and currently on antiretroviral (ARV) medication, according to LCS Senior Assistant Commissioner Phoka Scout.

This translates to 20.8 percent of the prison population — or roughly 1 in every 5 inmates living with HIV.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Scout presented these statistics to the parliamentary portfolio committee on Pandemics on May 19, 2025.
