Mamohau Hospital Manager, Joalane Mokoena, Fired
10 March 2026 by Limpho Sello
The Lesotho Catholic Bishops’ Conference (LCBC) has dismissed Joalane Mokoena from her position at Mamohau Mission Hospital, bringing a dramatic end to a tenure overshadowed by allegations of financial mismanagement, staff protests, and a high-stakes investigation.
Mokoena confirmed her dismissal to Uncensored News on March 6, 2026. She said she received a termination letter on February 23, 2026 and was shocked because a disciplinary hearing against her was still underway.
“On Monday the 23rd February 2026, I received the letter of termination of employment delivered at my home by a lady who I think was just a messenger,” Mokoena told Uncensored News.
She added: “I was surprised because I couldn’t understand how come I had to receive the letter of termination, while the process of disciplinary hearing was still in progress, with the employer having only called one witness, whose evidence was yet to be cross-examined.”

Mokoena’s dismissal follows 13 months of suspension, which began in December 2024. She was suspended over allegations of financial mismanagement, claims of medical negligence under her watch that led to a woman losing her womb, and protests by hospital staff demanding action against her leadership.
Hospital reliable sources told this publication Mokoena was dismissed over allegations of financial mismanagement; misuse of hospital funds and appropriation of wool and mohair funds. Sources further claim that Mokoena was dismissed over misuse of power and the exploitation of hospital staff; unauthorised use of hospital vehicles and staff for personal errands as well as chronic absenteeism from her official duties.
The downfall of the embattled manager began on September 8, 2024, when frustrated staff members penned a scathing formal complaint to Bishop Tumaole Bane (O.M.I). The letter accused Mokoena of creating a culture of victimisation and corruption.
By December 4, 2024, the LCBC moved to place Mokoena on indefinite suspension alongside the hospital board.

During the interim, LCBC Senior Accountant Thabo Maja stepped in as Acting Hospital Manager while internal investigations were conducted.
At the time, Maja confirmed to Uncensored News that the probe was centred on the heavy allegations levelled against Mokoena by her own subordinates.
Contacted for comment on March 05, 2026 Maja confirmed Mokoena’s dismissal but declined to comment further.
“Yes, she was dismissed on February 23, 2026 but may I please not go into details of this issue,” Maja said.
Mokoena complains over her dismissal
Meanwhile, Mokoena told this publication that she was unhappy with the dismissal and has already lodged an appeal challenging it.
“I have already lodged an appeal with the proprietor,” Mokoena said.
“I got dismissed through a process that might have been finalised without my participation and of which if that is the case, my absence was unlawful.”
She suspected the dismissal was orchestrated by “those who were involved” and ensured a decision to dismiss her was reached without her participation in disciplinary processes.
“In short, I got dismissed through a hearing which sought to be finalised without honouring my right to cross examine the evidence of the employer, without my defence and without a chance to mitigate.
“Most importantly the fact behind finalisation of the hearing in my absence still remain unknown as the report of the hearing that was used by the board to decide on the termination could not be availed to me despite different channels through which I asked.”
Mokoena’s allegedly legacy
Under Mokoena’s leadership, Mamohau Mission Hospital allegedly became synonymous with medical malpractice and administrative chaos. Uncensored News previously reported on several harrowing incidents that occurred during her tenure.
A 20-year-old Leribe woman lost her fertility after gauze was allegedly left inside her womb during surgery at the hospital. While the victim suffered a severe infection requiring corrective surgery at Queen ’Mamohato Memorial Hospital, the doctor responsible reportedly faced no disciplinary action under Mokoena’s watch.
Additionally, reports surfaced of a woman giving birth unassisted at the facility while the medical officer on duty faced zero consequences.
Furthermore, staff alleged that Mokoena reassigned a qualified radiographer to a laboratory role, leaving the X-ray department to be operated by dental assistants, cashiers, and IT personnel, leading to unreliable medical diagnoses for patients.
They further accused Mokoena of forcing drivers to pay up to M30,000 for vehicle damages already covered by insurance. In one instance, a junior accountant was allegedly forced to take a M 50,000 loan to cover missing funds rumoured to have been used for Mokoena’s personal education.
