The Chinese ambassador to Lesotho, Yang Xiaokun, says agriculture remains an important area of cooperation between Lesotho and China.

Xiaokun says the signing of a protocol on the export of Lesotho’s wool to China has provided both countries with an important foundation for expanding bilateral agricultural trade.

“Following the outbreak of foot-and-mouth (FMD) disease earlier this year, Chinese and Lesotho authorities maintained close communication and technical exchanges and worked through the relevant risk-assessment process to address the impact on wool and mohair exports,” Xiaokun said.

China subsequently lifted its temporary restrictions on wool imports from Lesotho on 26 May 2026. The decision followed months of engagement between the two countries after the FMD outbreak disrupted wool exports and left consignments stranded at South African ports. The Chinese government said the new protocol provides a framework for the orderly export of Lesotho’s wool and mohair, including during future FMD outbreaks.

Lesotho’s government welcomed the lifting of the restrictions, saying wool consignments that had been held at South African ports had since been released and payments to farmers had started.

Agriculture Minister Selibe Mochoboroane also said Lesotho had been required to demonstrate that its wool and mohair were free from FMD before the protocol could be signed.

 “With the resumption of trade, we hope to build on this progress, further expand market access and diversify Lesotho’s exports to China,” he said.

Speaking at a reception celebrating the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Xiaokun said China has fully implemented zero-tariff treatment for 53 African countries that have diplomatic relations with China. Lesotho is among the countries that will benefit from the policy.

“We hope to work together to turn this policy opportunity into concrete gains for Basotho farmers, businesses and workers, and to bring more quality Lesotho products to the Chinese market.”

Xiaokun also noted that 2026 marks 70 years since the beginning of diplomatic relations between China and African countries and is the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.

“In Lesotho, we have actively supported youth, educational, cultural and health cooperation. We also welcomed the 20th Chinese Medical Team to Lesotho, while Chinese medical specialists continue to share expertise and strengthen local capacity.”
